Norwegian prepositions for a topic (om, angående, når det gjelder, i forbindelse med)
Snakke om, en søknad om, angående, når det gjelder and i forbindelse med. How to say what something is about, from lunch chat to letters from NAV.
What is this about?
When you say what a conversation, a book or a letter is about, you need a preposition of topic. It makes clear what the matter is, whether you're chatting to a colleague or writing to the council.
The everyday word is om («Vi snakket om ferien», «en film om krigen»). It also follows many nouns («en søknad om barnehageplass», an application for a barnehage place, «informasjon om kurset»). In letters and emails angående and vedrørende are common («Angående møtet på fredag»), and in longer sentences Norwegians use når det gjelder, med tanke på and i forbindelse med («Når det gjelder lønna, er den grei»).
English about is the trap, because not every about is om. Think about is «tenke på» and wonder about is «lure på», but talk about is «snakke om» and read about is «lese om». An application for is «en søknad om», not «for». And after a fronted når det gjelder phrase the verb comes next, «Når det gjelder lønna, er den grei», never «den er grei».
You'll need these words when you call «om en annonse på Finn», write a complaint to your landlord or open a letter from NAV headed «Vedrørende søknaden din». At work meetings and parents' evenings, når det gjelder makes you sound organised.
The prepositions
om about
om is the normal word for a topic after verbs like snakke, fortelle, lese, skrive and drømme (snakke om, fortelle om) and in titles (en film om krigen).
Hva snakket dere om i lunsjen? What did you talk about at lunch?
Hun skrev en bok om oppveksten i Bosnia. She wrote a book about growing up in Bosnia.
Fortell litt om deg selv.Tell us a bit about yourself.
en søknad om an application for, information about (noun + om)
Many nouns take om (en søknad om dagpenger, informasjon om kurset, et spørsmål om lønn). Often om stands where English has for or on, as in an application for. For a job, though, Norwegians often say søke på (søke på en stilling).
Jeg har sendt søknad om barnehageplass.I've sent an application for a barnehage place.
Har du informasjon om norskkurset?Do you have information about the Norwegian course?
snakke om, tenke på talk about, but think about (om or på?)
Verbs of saying, writing and finding out take om (snakke om, lese om, høre om, hear about). But thinking, wondering, listening and waiting take på (tenke på, lure på, høre på, vente på). To ask for an opinion, say synes om (Hva synes du om det?, what do you think of it?).
Vi snakket om ferien hele kvelden. We talked about the holiday all evening.
Hva tenker du på nå?What are you thinking about now?
Har du hørt om den nye skolen?Have you heard about the new school?
angående and vedrørende are formal and appear mostly in letters, emails and subject lines (Angående fakturaen fra mars). vedrørende is even more formal. In speech you'd usually say om.
Jeg skriver angående fakturaen fra mars.I'm writing regarding the invoice from March.
Vi har mottatt brevet ditt vedrørende husleia. We have received your letter concerning the rent.
når det gjelder when it comes to, as for
når det gjelder puts a topic up front. The verb then comes straight after (V2), so it's Når det gjelder lønna, er den grei, not den er grei.
Når det gjelder lønna, er den grei.As for the pay, it's fine.
Når det gjelder ferie, må du snakke med sjefen. When it comes to holidays, you have to talk to the boss.
med hensyn til with regard to, in terms of
med hensyn til is formal and means når det gjelder, often in reports and rules (med hensyn til sikkerhet). Don't confuse it with ta hensyn til, which means to show consideration for someone.
Leiligheten er bra med hensyn til beliggenhet. The flat is good in terms of location.
Vi har strenge regler med hensyn til sikkerhet. We have strict rules with regard to safety.
med tanke på considering, with a view to
med tanke på is common in both speech and writing and means considering (med tanke på prisen, med tanke på barna). It can also point to a goal (med tanke på fast jobb, with a view to a permanent job).
Med tanke på prisen er bilen i god stand.Considering the price, the car is in good condition.
Vi valgte huset med tanke på skolen. We chose the house with the school in mind.
i forbindelse med in connection with
i forbindelse med says what something is connected with or happens because of (i forbindelse med flyttingen, i forbindelse med annonsen). It's common on the phone and in official notices.
Hei, jeg ringer i forbindelse med annonsen på Finn.Hi, I'm calling about the ad on Finn.
Det blir ekstra busser i forbindelse med konserten. There will be extra buses in connection with the concert.
en liste over, en oversikt over a list of, an overview of
After liste, oversikt and kart Norwegian uses over for what's included (en liste over legene, en oversikt over utgiftene). Om or av would sound wrong here, even though English says of.
Her er en liste over fastlegene i kommunen. Here is a list of the GPs in the municipality.
Lag en oversikt over utgiftene dine.Make an overview of your expenses.
⚠️ Typical mistakes
«✗ Jeg tenker om deg» copies think about. Thinking of someone takes på, «✓ Jeg tenker på deg».
«✗ en søknad for dagpenger» copies application for. Norwegian says «✓ en søknad om dagpenger».
«✗ Når det gjelder lønna, den er grei» keeps English word order. The verb comes right after the opening phrase, «✓ Når det gjelder lønna, er den grei».
«✗ en liste av legene» copies a list of. After liste Norwegian uses over, «✓ en liste over legene».
