Norwegian prepositions of belonging, part and material (av, til, for, på)
Hunden til naboen, laget av tre, skrevet av Ibsen and en kopp kaffe. How Norwegian shows belonging, parts and material, with examples and a quiz.
What is this about?
Some prepositions show how two things are linked. Who owns something, what is it made of, who did it, and which part of a whole are we talking about? English of covers almost all of this, but Norwegian shares the job between several words.
av says what something is made of («laget av tre»), who did something in the passive («skrevet av Ibsen») and which part of a group is meant («en av vennene mine»). til shows the owner and belonging in speech («hunden til naboen», «moren til Per»). for is used for responsibility («sjefen for avdelingen»), and på for parts and features («taket på huset»). Amounts take no preposition at all («en kopp kaffe»).
Of is the trap. A cup of coffee is «en kopp kaffe» with nothing in between, the roof of the house is «taket på huset», and the key to the car is «nøkkelen til bilen». Av is right for material, for the agent (written by) and for part of a group (one of my friends). Norwegian also has an s-genitive like English, «Pers bil», but without the apostrophe, and in speech people usually say «bilen til Per».
You'll use this when you introduce your family («Dette er moren til Ola»), read the label in a jumper («laget av ull»), order in the canteen («en kopp te og en bit kake») or explain who is head of your department.
The prepositions
laget av tre made of (material)
av + a material tells you what something is made of (laget av tre, et skjerf av ull, en ring av gull). Often you can also make one compound word (et trebord, et ullskjerf).
Hytta er laget av tre fra skogen her.The cabin is made of wood from the forest here.
Denne genseren er laget av ull. This jumper is made of wool.
en av vennene mine one of, many of, the end of (part of a whole)
av shows a part of a whole (en av vennene mine, mange av kollegaene, resten av dagen, slutten av filmen). After av the noun is often in the definite form.
En av kollegaene mine kommer fra Chile. One of my colleagues is from Chile.
Vi så ikke slutten av filmen. We didn't see the end of the film.
Mange av elevene tar buss til skolen. Many of the pupils take the bus to school.
en kopp kaffe a cup of coffee (no preposition for amounts)
Amount or container + contents go side by side with no preposition (en kopp kaffe, en liter melk, et glass vann, en bit kake). Use av only when you mean part of something specific (en kopp av kaffen du kokte, a cup of the coffee you made).
Kan jeg få en kopp kaffe og et glass vann? Can I have a cup of coffee and a glass of water?
Husk å kjøpe to liter melk.Remember to buy two litres of milk.
skrevet av Ibsen by (who did it, in the passive)
In the passive, av tells you who did it (skrevet av Ibsen, malt av Munch, Huset ble solgt av megleren). It's also used for pictures showing someone (et bilde av barna, a picture of the children).
Peer Gynt er skrevet av Henrik Ibsen.Peer Gynt was written by Henrik Ibsen.
Skrik er malt av Edvard Munch. The Scream was painted by Edvard Munch.
Pakken ble levert av Posten i går.The parcel was delivered by Posten yesterday.
hunden til naboen the neighbour's dog (til for the owner)
In speech til shows who owns something or how people are related (hunden til naboen, moren til Per, jakka til Emma). The thing comes first, in the definite form.
Hunden til naboen bjeffer hele natta. The neighbour's dog barks all night.
Dette er moren til Per.This is Per's mother.
Nøkkelen til bilen ligger på bordet. The car key is on the table.
Pers bil, bilen til Per Per's car (s-genitive or til)
The s-genitive has no apostrophe, and the thing after it stays indefinite (Pers bil, kommunens nettside). In speech most people say bilen til Per, and many say Per sin bil. In writing Pers bil is the safe choice.
Pers bil står parkert utenfor butikken.Per's car is parked outside the shop.
Du finner skjemaet på kommunens nettside. You'll find the form on the municipality's website.
sjefen for avdelingen head of, teacher for (responsible for)
for shows who is responsible for something or someone (sjefen for avdelingen, lærer for klassen, ansvarlig for kassa). For members and leaders of a group Norwegians often use i (lederen i klubben, ordføreren i Tromsø).
Hun er sjef for regnskapsavdelingen. She is head of the accounts department.
Ole er kontaktlærer for klasse 3B.Ole is the form teacher for class 3B.
taket på huset of (parts, names, prices), the roof of the house
på is used for parts, names and features of something (taket på huset, navnet på gata, prisen på strøm, hjulet på sykkelen). Av would sound wrong here.
Taket på huset må fikses før vinteren. The roof of the house has to be fixed before winter.
Jeg husker ikke navnet på gata.I can't remember the name of the street.
Prisen på strøm gikk opp i vinter. The price of electricity went up this winter.
et brev fra NAV from (origin, sender)
fra shows where something or someone comes from (et brev fra NAV, en venn fra Polen, ost fra Frankrike). For the creator of a work of art or a text, use av (et maleri av Munch).
Jeg fikk et brev fra NAV i dag.I got a letter from NAV today.
Kona hans er fra Litauen. His wife is from Lithuania.
et hus med hage with (a feature), a house with a garden
med after a noun tells you what something has or contains (et hus med hage, kaffe med melk, en mann med briller). The opposite is uten (en leilighet uten balkong).
Vi leier et lite hus med hage.We rent a small house with a garden.
Kan jeg få kaffe med melk? Can I have coffee with milk?
⚠️ Typical mistakes
«✗ en kopp av kaffe» copies a cup of coffee. Amounts take no preposition, «✓ en kopp kaffe».
«✗ Per's bil» copies the English apostrophe. Norwegian writes «✓ Pers bil».
«✗ taket av huset» copies the roof of the house. Parts of things take på, «✓ taket på huset».
«✗ Boka ble skrevet ved Ibsen» copies by. The agent in the passive takes av, «✓ Boka ble skrevet av Ibsen».
