Particle verbs: gi opp, finne ut

A particle verb is a verb + a small word (opp, ut, av, på …) that together get a new meaning – like English phrasal verbs. The stress falls on the particle.

We teach Bokmål, the written standard most people in Norway use.

Rules

  1. Stress on the particle: gi OPP (give up), finne UT (find out), slå AV (switch off). Without stress on the particle it is often just verb + preposition: Han SLO på døra = he knocked on the door; Han slo PÅ lyset = he switched on the light.
  2. Common particle verbs: gi opp (give up), finne ut (find out), slå av / slå på (switch off / on), stå opp (get up), legge seg (go to bed), se ut (look, appear), ta med (bring), kaste ut (throw out), komme an på (depend on).
  3. Fixed phrases with a noun: ta vare på (TA VA-re på) – take care of; legge merke til – notice; sette pris på – appreciate; få tak i – get hold of.
  4. Position: a noun can come before or after the particle: Slå av lyset. / Slå lyset av. – Turn off the light.
  5. A pronoun goes before the particle, as in English: Slå det av! – Turn it off! Jeg fant det ut. – I found it out. (not: Jeg fant ut det.)
  6. Negation and adverbs come before the particle: Hun ga ikke opp. – She didn't give up. Vi har aldri funnet ut av det. – We never figured it out.
  7. In the participle the particle can move in front and join the verb: lyset er slått av = lyset er avslått. But the joined verb often has a new or formal meaning: avslå = turn down, refuse.
  8. Learn particle verbs as whole phrases. As with English phrasal verbs, the meaning is rarely guessable.
