Prepositions of time and place
I, på, til and om are small words, but tricky. Learn them together with fixed expressions.
We teach Bokmål, the written standard most people in Norway use.
What is this about?
Prepositions are small words that show relations between things: where something is, where it's going, and when something happens. In Norwegian the main ones are «i», «på», «til» and «om». They're short, but they're everywhere.
The tricky part is that the choice often isn't logical. You say «i Oslo» (in Oslo) but «på Hamar» (in Hamar). You're «på jobb» (at work), «på butikken» (at the shop) and «på kino» (at the cinema), but «i stua» (in the living room) and «i byen» (in town). For time there are fixed phrases too: «i dag» (today), «i fjor» (last year), «på mandag» (on Monday), «om morgenen» (in the morning). The best strategy is to learn the preposition together with the word, as a little package: «på jobb», not just «jobb».
English has the same problem with in, on, at and to. Sometimes the two languages match: «i Norge» = in Norway. Often they don't: «om en uke» means in a week from now, and «halv seks» means 5:30, not 6:30! You'll need these words every day: when you book a doctor's appointment, take the bus or tell someone where you work.
Rules
- Place: i for countries, cities and rooms (i Norge, i Oslo, i stua); på for islands, surfaces and many places (på jobb – at work, på kontoret, på butikken, på Hamar).
- Direction: til – Jeg går til butikken (to the shop).
- Time: i (i dag – today, i går, i fjor – last year, i to år – for two years), på (på mandag – on Monday), om (om morgenen – in the mornings; om en uke – in a week from now).
- Clock: klokka fem, kvart over fem, halv seks (= 5:30, not 6:30!).
