Collocations: words that belong together

Norwegians «take» a decision and «put» a question. The right verb + noun makes you sound natural.

We teach Bokmål, the written standard most people in Norway use.

In short: A collocation is a group of words that naturally go together. The wrong verb is understandable but sounds un-Norwegian.

Rules

  1. Ta en beslutning: you «take» (not make) a decision. Vi må ta en avgjørelse i dag.
  2. Stille et spørsmål: you «put» a question; «spørre et spørsmål» is wrong. Kan jeg stille deg et spørsmål?
  3. Føre en samtale: a more formal way of saying «have a conversation». De førte en lang samtale om fremtiden.
  4. Legge vekt på: to emphasise, to attach importance to. Skolen legger stor vekt på lesing.
  5. Rette oppmerksomheten mot: to turn your attention to something. Nå retter vi oppmerksomheten mot klimaet.
  6. Sette i gang: to start, to launch. Kommunen satte i gang et nytt prosjekt.
  7. Komme til enighet: to reach an agreement. Partene kom til enighet i natt.
  8. Gjøre inntrykk: to make an impression. Hun gjorde et godt inntrykk på intervjuet.
  9. Ta hensyn til: to take into account, to show consideration for. Ta hensyn til naboene!
  10. Spille en rolle: to play a role, to matter. Prisen spiller ingen rolle.
  11. Learn them as pairs: note the verb and the noun together, not the noun alone.

Typical mistake: copying English «make a decision» as «gjøre en beslutning» or «ask a question» as «spørre et spørsmål». Say «ta en beslutning» and «stille et spørsmål».
