Practise telling the time in Norwegian

Look at the clock and choose the right Norwegian phrase. Learn «fem på halv tre» and «kvart over ni» the easy way.

What time is it? (Hva er klokka?)

Norwegian uses «halv» (half) for the half hour BEFORE the next full hour: halv tre is 2:30, not 3:30. So 2:25 is «fem på halv tre» (five to half three) and 2:35 is «fem over halv tre».

In everyday talk people use the 12 hour clock: «Vi ses klokka åtte.» Timetables, letters from NAV and work schedules usually use the 24 hour clock: «Møtet starter kl. 14.30.»
