Construction
Carpenters, concrete workers, bricklayers and labourers are needed on building sites all over Norway. Here you learn the words, rules and language you need to work safely.

The job and the demand
On a building site many trades work together. The carpenter builds timber frames, roofs and interior structures, the concrete worker builds formwork, fixes rebar and pours concrete, the bricklayer lays bricks and plasters, and the labourer carries materials, cleans up and helps the skilled workers.
According to NAV's 2026 business survey, Norwegian employers are short of about 33,750 people. Building and construction accounts for about 4,750 of them, including some 1,150 carpenters and joiners, 1,110 electricians and 950 other craftspeople.
Requirements and qualifications
Many jobs require a trade certificate (fagbrev), for example in carpentry, concrete work or bricklaying, but there are also jobs as a labourer without one. Everyone who works on a building or construction site must have an HMS card (construction ID card). Your employer orders the card, and it shows who you are and who you work for. Wear it visibly.
For some tasks the regulations or the insurance require documented training, for example erecting scaffolding, using fall protection equipment and hot work (welding, cutting and other work with open flames or sparks). Ask your employer which courses you need before you start, and keep your course certificates.
Recognition and routes into the trade
A trade certificate from another country is not automatically recognised in Norway. Check on nokut.no whether there is a recognition scheme for your country and your trade. Many people with long experience from their home country choose to take a Norwegian fagbrev instead.
You can do this as a praksiskandidat (experience-based candidate). You need varied practice in the trade that is at least 25 percent longer than the ordinary apprenticeship â in most building trades that means around five years. You also have to pass a theory exam before you can take the trade test. You apply to the county authority (fylkeskommunen). The rules can change, so always check udir.no and the county's website.
Finding a job
You find vacancies on arbeidsplassen.no (NAV) and finn.no. Many construction companies also recruit through staffing agencies. A staffing agency must be registered in the Labour Inspection Authority's register of temporary work agencies â check this before you sign anything.
Watch out for social dumping: pay below the minimum wage, no written employment contract, cash payment or long days without overtime pay. The collective agreement for building sites has been made generally applicable, so the minimum wage applies to everyone who works on a building site in Norway, including foreign workers. Many municipalities and public clients also have their own seriousness requirements, for example permanently employed skilled workers and apprentices.
Working conditions and rights
You have the right to a written employment contract. The minimum wage in construction follows from the regulation on the generally applicable collective agreement for building sites, and the rates change regularly â check the current rates on arbeidstilsynet.no. Under the Working Environment Act, overtime must be paid with a supplement of at least 40 percent, and the collective agreement may give more.
Your employer is responsible for HMS (health, environment and safety): training, protective equipment, safe scaffolding and guardrails. You must use the protective equipment and report hazards. The safety representative (verneombud) can stop work that is immediately dangerous. The trade union for construction workers is Fellesforbundet, which can help with pay, contracts and disputes.
Language on the building site
On the building site, language is a safety issue. You must understand instructions from the foreman, signs and safety rules, and you must be able to speak up when something is dangerous. Before risky work the team makes an SJA (safe job analysis), where you go through hazards and measures together.
Typical situations are the morning meeting, ordering materials, reporting a non-conformance or writing an RUH (incident report), asking for an instruction to be repeated and reporting an injury. If you haven't understood, say so. «Kan du gjenta?» (Can you repeat?) is always better than guessing.
